Certified Civil Trial Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association. Leonard is a former member of
the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Civil Trial Certification Board.
Governmental Liability and Civil Rights Defense. Leonard has successfully represented and defended
governmental entities and law enforcement officers accused of civil rights violations. Such lawsuits have
included allegations of wrongful arrest, excessive force, warrantless searches and wrongful death. Law
enforcement agencies and officers have long relied upon Leonard’s expertise in defending against such
claims and his vigorous efforts to work to have such claims dismissed through motion practice or won at
trial.
Land Use Litigation. Leonard has successfully defended municipalities involved in land use disputes
which have included issues pertaining to the applicability of ordinances, statutory interpretation,
development agreements and claims involving allegations of negligence, trespass and nuisance. He has
successfully litigated such matters through trial and appeal.

and perspective for clients at the early stages of litigation and develop a plan of action to handle such
cases in a cost effective, efficient and successful manner. He has handled a wide range of cases, including
product liability matters involving property damage, personal injury and death. He understands and
appreciates that the facts of each case are unique and require different strategies and approaches in order
to ensure success at trial in the event that a resolution cannot be reached which serves the best interest of
his clients. |
