Biography

Wick was a member of the Fargo law firm now known as Conmy Feste Ltd. from 1976 through 2008. His focus was always civil litigation, but his practice was unusually broad and varied. On a fairly even basis, Wick represented both plaintiffs (claimants) and defendants (or their insurers). Primary practice areas included personal injury, professional negligence (malpractice), commercial and construction claims. Wick tried numerous cases in both state and federal court. He appeared before the North Dakota Supreme Court, the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals (federal). Throughout his litigation practice, Wick was also very involved with the alternative dispute resolution process. He frequently represented parties in mediation or arbitration proceedings. He also served as both a mediator and an arbitrator.

In November of 2008, Wick was elected to serve as a district judge in the East Central Judicial District of North Dakota. His six-year term began on January 1, 2009, and ended on December 31, 2014. District judges have general jurisdiction, and preside over both criminal and civil cases. Therefore, the subject matter of Wick’s civil cases continued to be broad and varied. During his term as judge, Wick occasionally mediated civil cases at the request of the parties. He also participated in several appeals as a surrogate justice.

In 1990 Wick was board certified as a civil trial specialist by both the National Board of Trial Advocacy and the Minnesota State Bar Association. Since 1994, he has been rated “AV” or “Preeminent” by Martindale Hubbell, the oldest and most established organization conducting peer review within the legal profession. Shortly before he became a judge, Wick was included on the first listing of “Great Plains Super Lawyers”. The State Bar Association of North Dakota (SBAND) polls its membership regarding every person who seeks a judgeship, either by appointment or through the contested election process. In each category, the ratings Wick received in the SBAND poll were either the highest, or among the very highest, ever received by any candidate for district judge in North Dakota (including incumbents).

Wick has received more than 150 hours of formal training in the field of ADR. This includes courses in civil mediation, advanced civil mediation, family mediation and early neutral evaluation. He is listed on all three of the approved rosters of neutrals (civil mediation, domestic relations mediation and civil arbitration) maintained by the Supreme Court of North Dakota.
