Lanny is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a national professional association of select attorneys recognized as skilled in litigation and whose membership is limited to those considered the best in their states. Additionally, Lanny has recently been recognized as a "SUPER LAWYER."

He has been appointed to serve on the Alternatives For Dispute Resolution Committee of the College through October, 2007. He is a member of the West Virginia Bar Association and the National Bar Association, past president of the Ohio County Bar Association and a past member of the Board of Governors of the West Virginia Defense Trial Counsel. Lanny is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell, its highest rating. Martindale-Hubbell is the premier guide to professional achievement in the nation. Lanny has conducted hundreds of trials, both criminal and civil, and continues to maintain an active trial practice with an emphasis on medical malpractice, mass tort and complex litigation. He has been involved in many of the most recognized litigation of recent years, including tobacco (representing Philip Morris), phen-fen, silica and other toxic tort litigation.

He is a seasoned mediator with a state-wide and regional practice as well as serving in locales as far away as Canada. He is also a guest columnist for the Wheeling News-Register, authoring quarterly commentaries.
