Since 1989, Mimi has been deeply involved with the American Inns of Court movement. She served as organizing chair of both Inns of Court in Lafayette -- the American Inn of Court of Acadiana, and the John M. Duhe, Jr. American Inn of Court -- and also served as consultant to the Inn on the Teche in New Iberia and the Judge Albert Tate Inn of Court in Lake Charles. She has served as President and long-time Program Chair of the Acadiana Inn, which, in 2011, won first and third prizes in the national programming competition against 375 other Inns of Court, an unprecedented feat. Mimi has spoken at the American Inns of Court Leadership Summit in New Orleans in 2011 and 2013, and currently serves on the Fifth Circuit Advisory Committee of the American Inn of Court Foundation. At the national conference In May 2013, Mimi will serve as co-moderator of the Gala Evening Program, entitled "Wizard of Lawz," to be presented by the Acadiana Inn. The program will address the roles of civility and zeal in advocacy. |

Biography |
Mimi Methvin is a native of Alexandria, Louisiana. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Tulane University in 1974, and received her JD. Degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1976. While attending law school, she worked full-time on Capitol Hill for U.S. Representative Gillis W. Long.
Following law school, Mimi worked as an associate at Gist, Methvin & Trimble in Alexandria, La., and as an Assistant U. S. Attorney in Shreveport. As an AUSA, Mimi was assigned to both the civil and criminal divisions, defending medical malpractice cases and serving as assistant prosecutor in an extended and complex white collar criminal case. From 1981 to 1983, Mimi worked in Charleston, West Virginia as an environmental staff attorney for the U.S. Department of Interior. In June of 1983, she was appointed U. S. Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Louisiana (Lafayette).
While on the bench, Mimi presided over jury and non-jury trials in a wide variety of cases, including a 13-day jury trial in a patent infringement suit, and a 10-day jury trial in a product liability suit. In addition, she successfully mediated over 1000 civil cases of all types, including a number of complex, multi-party cases. In
1997, Mimi was appointed by the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist as one of three magistrate judges to serve on the Judicial Conference Committee on the Administration of the Magistrate Judges System. She served on this national policy-making committee for six years. |
